How did we get here?

Balancing Ethical, Commercial and Social Interests

Overview

Eight Australian and Indian researchers and educators collaborated over 18 months to analyse the impacts of critical and emerging technologies on peace and stability. The main focus of the research was the degree to which the two countries followed consistent processes of impact assessment. We found:

More consistency needed: Both Australia and India would benefit from a clearer commitment to regularised TIA of critical technologies for peace and stability.

TIA methodologies to align interests: Reliance on TIA would promote better alignment between government, industry, academia, and the community

Diplomatic potential: there is considerable diplomatic potential in promotion of comprehensive and disciplined TIA practices with evidence-based recommendations and risk controls

Impact & Project Highlights

TIA is not a luxury but a necessity for modern governance. It is rooted in ethics and  democratic consultation between  stakeholders - government, business, scientists, and the community.
